My in-laws are loud.
They talk loud. And they talk all the time.
I hide up in the computer room all night long or run quickly to the basement to watch tv after I put my daughter to bed because they are so freaking loud.
I can hear full conversations while I'm putting my daughter to sleep. That is, if she actually falls asleep before I do. Because she can hear everything too. And it's not nice soft sweet comforting lullabies.
I even have those playing and they don't cover up the freaking noise.
I can usually handle it, but seriously, it's getting on my nerves. I'm fairly talkative, but silence, particularly now as a mother, is golden. I don't need to talk all the time. In fact, there are times when I wish I didn't have to talk. Maybe that's why I like blogging so much. I can do it in TOTAL SILENCE.
I've actually thought about calling my husband to call them while I'm putting her down for bed and letting him tell them to shut-up because quite frankly, I just can't think of a nice way to say it.
"STFU" is about all I can come up with, and I'm guessing that won't go over too well.
Any other suggestions?

How flattering is this??/ Thanks Leah. Just what the doctor ordered.

I don't have a suggestion on how to make your inlaws shut-up but what about white noise while putting your daughter to sleep. We use fans in our boys' rooms. The ones we have are small but powerful and keep the noise out. We started it when our little one was born so he wouldn't wake our older son since their rooms are right next to eachother. It works well for us.

Echoing Jessica's suggestion - we've got a white noise machine and I love it. Because I. HATE. NOISE.
They're not going to shut up. I'm almost certain. Anyone who gets that irrational about a fucking pot is not going to understand that they are NOISY.

No, Kristen, "shut the fuck up" is much too harsh and rude - you'd be setting a bad example. "PLEASE shut the fuck up" would be much better...

I think the white noise suggestion is good. In the room where our daughter sleeps (which is inconveniently actually the guest room and very close to the living area/TV room) we have a fan, a loud air filter, and I run the fan in the bathroom next door.
I can't think of a way to get them to shut up, short of getting them out of the house somehow...like maybe in some grief and loss support group for people who have lost small, crappy pots? ;)

I fourth the suggestion to use white noise. Although I've been meaning to buy an actual white noise machine for my girls, we have always used a fan in the summer and a cool-mist humidifier in the winter. The girls cry if I forget to turn either on. Tater will say she's "hot" and for me to turn on the fan, thinking that that is what the humidifier does. I also saw a CD somewhere - I'll e-mal you the link when I find it - that is all white-noise-related stuff - washer/dryer, hair dryer, etc. Or you could tell them to shut up. Either way.

And for yourself, I highly recommend foam ear plugs. YES, you will still be able to hear your baby cry. Yes, you will still hear some of the noise. But it pushes the noise off, like its a couple of rooms further away. They are less effective at blocking high-pitched noises, so smoke alarms, regular alarms, and babies crying will still get through. However, you can ignore any talk you want to and make the excuse, Oh, I forgot to take the ear plugs out.
